. our susan candiotti joins us with the latest on the investigation. >> and of course the question is, why an attack on this 34-year-old diplomat who had been in the country for about eight years now working at the nicaraguan mission. cesar mercado. and police found not one but two knives. and they weren't found next to his body. they were found in the bathroom of the small studio apartment where the diplomat lived. cesar mercado, apparently one of the knives were a steak knife according to new york police commissioner paul brown. and he says it was found near the bathroom sink and the sink was filled with blood, unfortunately. and the second knife was a smaller paring knife and that was found inside the sink. so why the positioning of the knives? so many questions to be answered here. his body was found just inside the front door. and when the driver came, the door was unlocked. he opened it up, looked inside, saw the body, and immediately called the police. so they have a lot to try to figure out. his throat, indeed, was cut. and they also said that he was stabbed in the stomach. so

, there are lots of questions, one of which includes how police are handling this case. thelma gutierrez joins us live. was this a cult? what's going on here? >> reporter: don, obviously, there's some kind of a disconnect between the stories that the spouses told investigators and what now the women are telling investigators. so, we're not exactly sure exactly how this thing is going to come out, but i can tell you that they belong to a church here in palmdale. these women say that they just broke off from the church. they went off on these little prayer sessions that they would organize on their own. they routinely would come out to the desert and pray overnight and so, something happened, don, that made the husbands go into authorities and say, we're very concerned. authorities look through some of the belongings that these women left behind, cell phones, apparently letters that were interpreted as good-bye notes, and they wanted to know, were these children, eight children and five women, in any kind of danger. so, they said they wanted to err on the side of caution and so, they started this h

in islamabad for us. just how much back and fourth have we beenhaving? we thought she could be released, and then she wasn't. looks like reza is not hearing me. we will continue to work on getting him back up. let me go back. sarah shourd is her name. her along wit two friends have been held and were accused of being spies. we got word last week that there was a deal in place to allow her to have a conditional release, just t heard. we got that word late last week and we thought she was going to be released on saturday, and then iran came back and said things are not in place and the judicial pross has not played out, and now this morning there is word that she could be released if $500,000 in bail was paid. that's where we are now. now, new information whas been back to us, and now everything is in place for sarah shourd to be replaced as soon as the money is paid. $500,000. it's being called bail money, but once that is paid she would be released and go back to the united states, and that mney would be forfeited even if they did want to try her. but sh would be out of there. however,

in new york within the next couple of hours. our susan candiotti is in new york for us. susan, good morning to you. it seems sarah already has an itinerary set for her when she gets back. >> reporter: oh, that's right. she'll be busy with a news conference, or at least reading from a prepared statement when she gets back. of course, we're all looking forward to hearing that. you know, t.j., you can certainly be sure this will be a day of mixed emotions for sarah shourd. of course, she will be thrilled to be setting foot on u.s. soil for the first time in more than 13 months, but after all, she is leaving behind her two friends, including her fiance, shane bauer, to whom she became engaged while she was in prison in iran, as well as her other friend josh fattal. of course, they were released from iran and arrived in oman earlier this week. on tuesday she was met which her mom and her uncle at the time. and this followed secret negotiations that took place. our senior correspondent nic robertson has learned they began about eight months ago, and at first, he said, he learned from oman

go, but it is going to cost. reza sayah is on the story for us this morning. reza, good morning to you. how much does i iran want? >> reporter: $500,000, t.j. that's how much they want. this has been a bizarre process in iran, and no doubt a difficult one for sarah shourd and her family to go through, of course. initially iranian officials came out last week and said sarah shourd would be released. then they said she wouldn't be released. and now today, again, they're saying she c be released, in exchange for half a million dollars in bail money. the latest twist came today at a news conference by tehran's revolutionary court prosecutor. the prosecutor saying today that shourd's f sarah medical condition, iran is offering to release her for that ba ail money. i don't think there is any doubt that her famy is somehow going to come up with thatmoney. it is not clear at this point when that's going to happen and when she will be allowed to leave the country. as far as the other two hikers go, shane bauer and joshua fattal, the prosecutor said today they're not going anywhere, they'

'll tell us how the administration is about to go with a prominent republican. let's begin with brianna keilar live in washington. congress is back in session for the big midterm election push and they've got a very big issue on their hands in the matter of whether or not to extend these bush tax cuts. this is -- this is going to be an interesting one to watch in the next couple of days. >> and this is the big issue, jim. this is the issue that in really less than four weeks because they're out of there again. they're out of washington again ahead of the election season, this is what they're going to be dealing with. and obviously, the issue that continues to resinate is republican leader john boehner who had said that he would go along with extending the tax cuts for everyone except for the wealthiest earns, which, of course, is what president obama has gone for. but it's created a jumbled message among republicans. because look at what some other republicans are saying. you have mitch mcconnell who is saying, no, i'm pushing legislation to keep these tax cuts in place across the board

shot there, but we are expecting conditions to go downhill. now, what about the u.s.? are we going to see any impact here? you bet we are, the same we did with earl and danielle. we've got a high risk of rip currents here on the atlantic coast, particularly bad into the carolinas. another thing that we're keeping our eye on is that disturbance in the gulf of mexico. maybe a little moisture from karl got wrapped up in this, but this is an upper level disturbance. right now it doesn't have a circulation, so it's not a tropical storm or a tropical depression. it's a wave or cluster of thunderstorms. the concern here is not necessarily that it has much time to turn into a tropical storm, but it a es going to bring torrential downpours. the rain from houston toward the south and west. flood watches in effect here. 3 to 5 inches expected and texas has been hard hit with a couple of different tropical depressions and storms already in the last couple of weeks. so adding more insult to injury with all this moisture, we're going to likely see river flooding as well as flash flooding from so
